the WORKSHOPS |
In the northwest corner of the Abbey grounds were
the workshops for the Abbey. At a present day Abbey or Cathedral there is
often a maintenance yard on the site where skilled craftsmen carry on the
never-ending tasks of upkeep of the stonework, tiled roofs, windows and
doors of the huge building. At Reading Abbey there were the same tasks to be
done for the Abbey church and on all the other buildings of this town within a
town. There is no certain evidence for the Abbey maintenance yard and
workshops to be positioned here so it is an educated guess.
Plumbing work using lead for the Abbey church roof and guttering etc was done in different sheds near the north or Plummery Wall. Click here. |
