Market Place West


5.5  Market Place, The Simeon Monument
Constructed in 1804. It is also known as the Soane Monument after Sir John Soane who designed it.

This plaque at the base reads "Erected and lighted forever at the expence of Edward Simeon Esqr, as a mark of affection
to his native town AD 1804. Lancelot Austwick Esqr Mayor."

5.6  Market Place, Corn Exchange
Built 1854. The entrance to what used to be the Corn Exchange. A photograph of the Corn Exchange buildings before they were demolished can be seen on the Reading Museum website

5.7  Listed Buildings, Nos 27 and 28 (to the right) and 29-31 (left, listed as "The Coopers public house") Market Place
Nos. 29-31 are 17th century, nos. 27/28 are early 17th century, possibly older. 27/28 has jetties at both ground/1st floor and 1st/2nd floor levels.

Nos. 27/28 look a little grimy in these photos. Scaffolding was erected against these buildings in May 2021, we can look forward to them looking fresher when it comes to be removed.

5.8  Listed Buildings: Nos 23-26 Market Place
An early 19th century building. Its exterior is of Bath stone which has been covered with a rendering material except on part of the ground floor.
The pilasters are Doric, being plainer than the Ionic pilasters of 10 High St.
