Hospitium


The Hospitium was once the guesthouse for pilgrims visiting Reading Abbey. It has also served as part of Reading School and as University College, which developed into Reading University. Further information can be seen on the photograph of the Interpretation Panel

Interpretation Panel for the Hospitium

This piece of tracery is to be found on the other side of the path from the Hospitium. It is the remains of the west window of St Laurence's church. It was torn out of the church by the bombs which landed near the west end of the church in 1943, and was reconstructed here.

The tablet which lies in front of the tracery. The inscription is obscured by lichen but reads:
"This tracery formed part of the / west window of St Laurence's Church / It was dislodged during enemy action / on February 10th 1943".
